This ignores the fact that Trump regularly changes his apparent position from A to B, B to C, and then on to D or back to A. All that changes is the timeframe within which these multiple changes take place. These positions are all mutually exclusive, but each have some coherent facts (or, more often, interpretations of facts) associated with them. Each of these realities is self-encapsulated and unrelated to the others. That is why it needs to be plural.

In reality, this is no great surprise, the far right have always been masters of compartmentalisation: holding numerous positions that would be contradictory if they ever met each other, but they don't, even though they exist in the same head. The primary symptom of compartmentalisation meeting reality is cognitive dissonance which leads to the behaviours you see in Trump: retreating in a huff or going on the attack.
