The Republican party is built around an uneasy alliance betewen two very different sets of political preferences. A schism was inevitable, the question was always what the catalytst would be.

I think people are ignoring the twin possibilities that the current Tantrums of the GOP is a follow-on from Protestantism having finally descended into minority status -- with non-belief being the fastest growing religious category -- with being white in America following suit in the coming decades. Given the GOP's reliance on WASPs in particular, and anyone that is White and/or Anglo-Saxon and/or Protestant as a fallback, they are fighting very hard to remain relevant, and it's required a psy-op (Fox News) to achieve it.
