I wonder if the Marriage Fundamentalists, who are, I would guess, predominantly conservative and religious (and quite possibly conservatively religious), are so at pains to protect marriage and hold it up as the gold standard, because, if George Lakoff is to be believed, it is the metaphor upon which their entire worldview is based (the nation as a family). If they accept that single parents can raise children to be productive members of society then their worldview becomes (even more) unmoored from reality. Of course, if they actually cared about families raising productive members of society they wouldn't demonize single mothers, all the while supporting abortion bills that create single mothers.

Spealing of single mothers, for those that have left abusive partners in particular, I wonder if it is the fact of having left a bad situation to look after themselves and their kids that rubs off on their kids. As a reaction to that situation, I imagine it speaks volumes to the kids.
