I would refer you to he most excellent book, Asymmetrical Politics (By Hopkins & Grossmann), which contends that the above is incorrect insofar as the Republicans are conservative ideologues and the Democrats are a loose confederation of interest groups with no single uniting ideology. I find that the American situation makes much more sense in this view.
