Except that both would be demolished by the Democrats (as it is the GOP only wins by voter suppression, gerrymandering and maintaining the vote-distortion that is the electoral college. Given how, for the GOP, the power is the point, I think this unlikely to happen.

I mean, The GOP is pretty much founded on the union of near opposites (libertarians and conservatives) so maintaining an uneasy truce in order to defeat their joint "enemy" is in their DNA.
